In order to achieve this we regard our seniors as role models for younger children and provide them with more opportunities to realise their influences are more effective than they realise.
By becoming a senior at the Hangout, Children are able to demonstrate their abilities and interests in assisting Staff through daily activities; seniors hold no responsibility for care or supervision but they do:
•encourage those who may have difficulty interacting with others,
•support their interests and conversation,
•share and develop ideas and projects,
•promote the use of positive language and behaviour,
•show their commitment to helping others,
•provide a friendly ear to those without siblings,
•demonstrate respect through interaction and play,
Seniors evolved through our ‘Buddy System’ when we recognised that Children aged between 10 – 13 years would have a different perspective on planned activities.
From establishing the kids Committee and the Seniors we can identify a connection between age groups that demonstrates respect for each other in a supporting role.
